LRT if we were to replace the save icon, what would it be? There's so many different media we save to - hard drives, solid state drives, portable flash memory (USB drives, SD), the cloud... Maybe the floppy disk is fine as it is?

I was having this thought yesterday??? Despite simply being engrained, I feel like - as with old landline phones being used for call buttons - it's just more recognisable compared to a CD or a flash drive or something since - again, like phones - things look more generic now.

yeah. skeuomorphism is that now-dated design practice of making UIs look tangible and realistic. I didn't know that those were also called skeuomorphs too tho, that's interesting.
