The fact that this approach never even occurred to me until just now probably indicates my interest level in being a server-side programmer (i.e., zero).

In retrospect, it was nuts to do all the work on the device, receiving huge amounts of XML over 3G (or Edge!). It would have been smarter to run my own server and just send it the user’s coordinates and direction, do the search on the backend, and return results to the phone.

The reason this was a torture test was that the algorithm would look ahead a certain distance — I want to say like 5 miles — in a 90° arc for further freeway segments with the name of your current freeway. Easy when the road is straight; hard when it twists all over the place.

My torture test for the road-finding algorithm was I-80 up by Truckee, CA, where it has to wind through the Sierras. This is what convinced me I was on to something (for what it was worth, which turned out to not be much).

Ah, found them. Here are some of my debugging screens from when I was working on the logic to figure out where the damn road was, overlaid on Google Maps images.

The other thing about this app was that MapQuest didn’t have any API remotely like what I needed. The app had to find freeway segments by name, arrange them end to end, then search along that path for exits, THEN search around the exits for businesses.

I miss having this app; it was useful to me. But I needed like a year of runway to make it work, and ran out of money after 3 months, at which point I had to take a kind of awful contract gig to pay the bills. Also, I had to pay half to MapQuest for the data. And the API changed.

You could either get a list of upcoming exits, and then tap one to see what services were there, or you could tap gas/hotel/food to just find those. You could also favorite brands and search for just those at upcoming exits.

The idea of the app was that it would only look ahead of where you were going (no point finding stuff behind you), and would only look around exits (no point if you can’t get to it). It was meant to need as little interaction as possible.

Digging through an old photo library, I found screenshots from my brief time as a fully indie developer. My one real app, “Road Tip”, found gas/food/lodging ahead of you on the freeway, organized by exit.

I have no idea if Foundation is going to be a good show or not. I have not read the novels. But I’ll watch it just because that logo is so damn good.

It used to be whenever someone sneezed near me I’d leave the café, now it’s whenever I hear someone talking about blockchain.

Tip: If you do it by setting a logging breakpoint rather than adding a print() statement, you can take it out when you’re done without having to recompile.

I keep wondering why I’m tired all the time, until I realize what a tough year it’s been. I wish the abuse would let up, but I guess it’s just going to be one thing after another.

New mouse feels a little chonky rolling across the desk, and just when I’m inclined to flip it over, take out the ball, and scrape any accumulated crud off the rollers, I remember it’s not the 1990s anymore.

I am comfortable with C in the same way I am comfortable with a chain saw. I know how to maintain one, I can use it with some skill, and I never use it unless I absolutely have to.
