to all the Internet Dudes in my mentions about sonos: 1) doesn't matter if it was supported for 10y, the average consumer doesn't expect a speaker to stop being supported 2) it's wasteful, late stage capitalism to expect every device to have a software-limited shelf life

yeah, software engineering nerds, it's a hard/annoying problem to support 10y+ devices in your code ...but you can demand better than filling dumps around the world with your waste because you couldn't be bothered finding a way to give that hardware a second life

I'm told that sonos, weirdly, has state of the art boot security, so getting custom firmware onto them turns out to be very difficult. The *one* time someone does IoT security right...

Unpopular opinion here- isn’t 15 years a decent lifetime for a software series? I’m reading it that they have new features that won’t work on the older hardware. Not defending Sonos in particular but when you rely on a vendor for software updates this eventually happens.

Except many of these components were still available 5 years ago (and I've seen reports of some having been purchased as recently as 2 or 3 years ago).
