    At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize a book. We never destroy a book by cutting off its binding. Instead, we digitize it the hard way--one page at a time.

    Under the terms set by big publishers, libraries have to pay per circulation AND their legally purchased collections will disappear after a certain number of years or loans. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Below, an analogy to make it clear how ridiculous this is 🧵

    7 & 8/ 1851 & 1814 - US Library of Congress. The was first destroyed by British troops during the War of 1812 during the sack of Washington DC. Then fire ravaged it again in 1851, burning 2/3 of the Thomas Jefferson collection--an est.35,000 books in total

    On-the-ground reports from staff about the extent of losses at the Special Collections at the University of Cape Town. Sadly, only some of these rare materials have been digitized.

    Our Special Collections library went up in flames today. It housed rare manuscripts, books, photos, maps, as well as a collection of African gazettes we have been slowly digitizing for open access. This is a huge loss.😖
