Running through a sample of relevant accounts from October using 14/88 as a self-identifier, looks like 90 percent are still online with the same handles.

That's higher than would be expected in a random sample of active users, but not a whole lot higher. Certainly far less pressure than on overt ISIS accounts.

While there's some variations in who got purged today, there's a definite bias toward offline organizations and people associated with such.

So how's that new rule against hate symbols going? Here are 615 avatars, as of today, for users who IDed with 14/88 in October. Red X is a suspended account. In short, I am underwhelmed.pic.twitter.com/3s0erYsfhe

A small but significant number of users appear to have changed their handles and branding to avoid the purge. They needn't have bothered.

* X = Suspended, self-deleted or name change. I estimate about 2/3 are suspensions.

This seems to be a PR stunt, sadly... also with the whack-a-mole effect those handles will be back up shortly, and for the tech savvy, bots may be created in their place... therefore exacerbating the problem

People should know better than to say whack-a-mole to me by now.

Touche. It'll be interesting to look at the data, I'm not convinced the targets at-large are significant operators, & it's also a different target set from ISIL handles. Overall, I agree the action is commendable but underwhelming. Key question is why these targets & not others?

Following up on this - did I miss posted results of this theory?

My theory turned out to be wrong, so it never got posted.

Twitter is not the government. Does not apply. If you were a US citizen, you'd know that, tovarisch.
