It was ok until they introduced modules in java 9. I migrated a 1.3 application to 8 almost instantly. It took me several weeks to go from 8 to 9

Backwards compatibility is what brought us raw types and such, and also means generics won't get fixed anytime soon.

And that backward compatibility was broken with Java 9 module system, which almost no one uses
