The vitriol should be directed at institutions that have always assigned disproportionate value to what some of us produce over others (twice as hard for half as much), not at those who feel imperiled by the “merit scarcity” reserved for the usual suspects / usual politics.

I'd nuance this to say that there's a difference between academics who produce, and those who brag/humblebrag about producing during this time, almost as a putdown to others. I suspect that a lot of the criticism is really aimed at that phenomenon without explicitly naming it.

I’d also acknowledge, though, that academia has set itself up as an economy that only recognizes “personhood” viz. the institution. As much as we all try to get on w/ the rest of our lives, some have (for this reason) poured themselves entirely into seeking recognition thru it.
