    Confession: My lab notebooks read like this ever since I started typing them, and I’m not even sorry

    Imagine if protocols started the same way blog post recipes do: The winter wind chilled the lab windows as I sat bundled in my lab coat and gloves at the bench this morning when I decided to try a little experiment.. who doesn't love the smell of fresh hot LB on a Sunday morning!

    While I’m at on code style: Tabs are great! We have a whole oversized key on our keyboards that specifically means “indent this line one more level”, and everybody can read it as the width they prefer without merge conflicts. Why *wouldn’t* you use them?

    As points out, XML (and SuppsDists) are no longer ORPHANED. Likewise, 'lpSolve' will soon be un-ORPHANED. I think marking them as ORPHANED, which they were, helped R Core identify high-risk dependencies on the CRAN stack, including in R itself, cf

    Hey , I just ran R CMD check on big set of packages, 15 of which import {XML}. I got back `Requires orphaned package: ‘XML’` from… only one of them and only with R-devel? Thoughts? I’m, uh… puzzled.

    Script (not mine!) last revised 2015-06-19. Depends on package that was orphaned and archived from CRAN 2014-09-20 Gonna go ahead and say CRAN’s not the thing hindering reproducibility for this one

    If you want to advance science and master R packaging at the same time, I strongly endorse this approach

    3/n. I have spent the past week obsessing over this and decided to put together a functional package. Taking the Everglades Phosphorus Gradient Model from a spreadsheet into R. No updating...just translating. Hopefully, it will make into CRAN.

    Basically I’m used to thinking of CRAN distribution as a badge of *permanence*, with only a side helping of quality guarantee. Dunno if that was ever the right mental model, but it’s definitely wrong now and I don’t like that I don’t know how to think about it instead.

    Love too start my week learning yet another package I depend on has been archived from CRAN. I don’t know what the solution is, but as a user this removal rate sure doesn’t feel sustainable.
