[2/10] Between the clear accepts and clear rejects, we always have major grey zones. The difference between the last paper that made it to acceptance and the first that did not is often negligible, while it will make a major difference in the way the authors will be perceived.

[3/10] We base paper rankings on peer review. However, reviewers may not agree on a clear-cut ranking criterion. As soon as multiple interest domains & disciplines will be non-uniformly represented (often, with heavy skews), the selection/curation becomes even less trivial.

[4/10] We all are aware how peer review is under increasing pressure. For literally all well-established conferences in my professional spheres, each year I hear more complaints about unmanageable paper volumes, decreasing review quality, no room for proper rebuttal/discussions.

[5/10] And what is it that we seek from conferences, as opposed to other forms of scientific dissemination? Increasingly, I hear people mentioning the in-person exchange of ideas, possibilities for interaction and networking. More so than the papers, which we can read anytime.

[6/10] If acceptance rate solely indicates quality, I should be embarrassed having been general co-chair to
#ismir2019. At 44.7% acceptance, we'd classify worse than poor. But our independent, interdisciplinary society values openness & accessibility over formal prestige badges.Prikaži ovu nit -
[7/10] Thanks to this, it is innovative, diverse and inclusive. Everyone who attended will agree that
#ismir2019 was a high quality conference, trying to constructively address many current concerns about academic culture. Also see our chair's welcome at https://collegerama.tudelft.nl/Mediasite/Showcase/ismir2019/Presentation/2e4b4381d4584fef835416e324bfe26a1d ….Prikaži ovu nit -
[8/10] Of course, you didn't notice. Despite efforts to set a public example (also opening elements to the public), the largest Delft conference my department has hosted in the past 10 years hardly got broader attention. I tried, but usually got "I'm busy & don't do music" back.

[9/10] At least, some students (not necessarily in my field) who liked me supported us as volunteers. And I've seen how
#ismir2019 positively changed their perception of academic culture. One of them is in your course, saw this slide and asked my thoughts, triggering this thread.Prikaži ovu nit -
[10/10] Please, let's not push the image to our students that volume and selectivity are the only things mattering in science. Too much celebration of this is leading to pathological situations. And let's not forget that good science does extend beyond our (narrow) subject areas.

This slide is such a terrible idea. Maybe we can add that citations and h-index are a reward and a good indicator, too?
-
These measures, like acceptance rates, are highly domain specific, and problematic for interdisciplinary research.
