not sure how I feel overall about the critique, but he gets to an interesting point where I realized that the better researcher often looks worse in terms of research output because they refuse to pursue BS lines of inquiry

In our data-driven world, the claim that we don’t have a good way to study something quantitatively may sound shocking. The reality even worse — in many cases we don’t even have the vocabulary to ask meaningful quantitative *questions* about complex socio-technical systems.

“AI ethics” was barely a term in 2018. Now it’s the hottest one surrounding the field. As we ring in the new year, let’s convert this talk into action. We need it more than ever.

    1) In 2008 a salmon (yes the fish) was put through an MRI scanner. The salmon was shown a series of photographs of humans in social situations, and asked to determine the emotion of the person in the photo (yes, really).

I love this list of what it takes to be a good scientist by When we talk about scientific practices, it’s valuable to think about what the social identity of a should entail. Note that nothing in this identity involves outgroup derogation.

[10/10] Please, let's not push the image to our students that volume and selectivity are the only things mattering in science. Too much celebration of this is leading to pathological situations. And let's not forget that good science does extend beyond our (narrow) subject areas.

[9/10] At least, some students (not necessarily in my field) who liked me supported us as volunteers. And I've seen how positively changed their perception of academic culture. One of them is in your course, saw this slide and asked my thoughts, triggering this thread.
