Stallman was the founder - and is STILL the President and Board Chair - of the Free Software Foundation. The FSF is enormously influential. Among other activities, it publishes the software licenses used by much of the 'copyleft' world - the GPL, LGPL, and AGPL licenses.
His sexist attitudes have been well-known in the OS community for a while. He's also hugely out of touch with the developer community on a lot of other things but tolerated because he's the founder and because of past achievements (often very long past).
(Not even sure what if anything he's the lead developer of anymore. Emacs? He famously lost control over his compiler package when his development model was proved to be inefficient.)
