Uh dear, a StringBuilder is randomly nulling itself in a loop that just appends stuff to the end, and only in release build. Scaryballs bugs
Time to start bisecting my 2gig project until I've a test case I can send to @unity3d (I'll eat my hat if it's not a bug in mono) :( :( :(
