they're alright, but honestly, you're better off keeping a macbook as your portable machine and just building a windows desktop unless you need GPU capacity on the go to an extent

I watched a video recently talking about all the eGPU problems and value loss (I was considering one down the line). For something compact you could always get Intel NUC. I use an old Alienware Alpha R2 for gaming every day. Could Steamlink if you want to use the mac screen.

I tried living the eGPU+laptop life for the last two years. Finally gave up a couple months ago and just built a desktop computer, don't regret it at all.

My eGPU setup totally /worked/ (even played a lot of VR games with it), but there was a lot of jank--there are perf hits, Windows really does not handle connecting/disconnecting the eGPU very well, most portable laptops are not great at dealing with heat, etc.
