Does it happen on other hardware also?

Consider sharing builds with trusted people - if it's just your computer, and if your computer's super old, then it's not such a big problem.

it was top of the range for 2018... it should have the grunt to do this and then some

i will come back to it when i can generate some more income to invest in a windows dev machine which would enable profiling (gpu profiling doesn't work on mac, and the reported cpu times for similar amounts of function calls vary so wildly as to be useless info)

(you could try bootcamp w/ windows - gpu profiling should work there IIRC?)

hd is too full, so it would require some juggling, but that is a good shout. i'm not sure if it's even gpu bound as the problem seems to occur regardless of res. of late, it seems either the game runs choppy with occasional big universal slowdown, and the editor runs smooth...

so i rejig a few things and optimise stuff now the judder is gone in the build, the big slowdown is still there but rarely, yet the editor is unplayable. perhaps it's close to cpu and gpu bound and i'm constantly shifting that?

anyway, it's been going round like this for far too long and i need a break from it. eventually computers will be fast enough it won't matter i guess :D but i need it to work on my dev machine

Mm, I understand. (I've been having similarly dispiriting debugging experiences with my own stuff, FWIW).
