today i learnt about fedora's attempt at a "no-flag" policy https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Package_Maintainers_Flags_Policy … using flags for languages has always been a pet peeve of mine. the mapping has never been 1:1, and assuming it is produces a strange view of the world.

interesting how much further this policy goes (even using flags for geographical locations is considered unnecessary, which strikes me as a bit arbitrary?)

Or is it to get around issues where flag use is controversial but place name isn't? (
vs "Taiwan" say).1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

i would only guess so. also e.g. what flag do you display for crimea? an israeli settlement in palestine? choosing a flag is taking a political stance.

I see that flag-use is both a place indication + a support of a particular state at that location. Place-names attached to locations can be that too of course (cf Ireland/Republic of Ireland/Northern Ireland/Ulster/..., or regions with border disputes), but to a lesser degree.
