today i learnt about fedora's attempt at a "no-flag" policy https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Package_Maintainers_Flags_Policy … using flags for languages has always been a pet peeve of mine. the mapping has never been 1:1, and assuming it is produces a strange view of the world.
Or is it to get around issues where flag use is controversial but place name isn't? (
vs "Taiwan" say).

i would only guess so. also e.g. what flag do you display for crimea? an israeli settlement in palestine? choosing a flag is taking a political stance.

I see that flag-use is both a place indication + a support of a particular state at that location. Place-names attached to locations can be that too of course (cf Ireland/Republic of Ireland/Northern Ireland/Ulster/..., or regions with border disputes), but to a lesser degree.
