today i learnt about fedora's attempt at a "no-flag" policy https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Package_Maintainers_Flags_Policy … using flags for languages has always been a pet peeve of mine. the mapping has never been 1:1, and assuming it is produces a strange view of the world.
interesting how much further this policy goes (even using flags for geographical locations is considered unnecessary, which strikes me as a bit arbitrary?)

Or is it to get around issues where flag use is controversial but place name isn't? (
vs "Taiwan" say). -
i would only guess so. also e.g. what flag do you display for crimea? an israeli settlement in palestine? choosing a flag is taking a political stance.
