If you do this for lots of positions, moving/rotating the laser around, then only knowing the position of the laser and how much light was absorbed (i.e. how much matter was in the path of the ray), you can try to reconstruct the shape of the object. [The big difference in Picross is that you get information about contiguous segments in (e.g. [2,3] a group of 2 and a group of 3), which Radon doesn't give you (it would just tell you "5") ]
