There’s nothing wrong with the links: the images have been destroyed. I have no explanation. I thought it might be when I moved websites, but the original images are likewise 0x0 pixel files. I’m dumbfounded.

Huh, yeah! When I tried to download http://dedalvs.com/smileys/images/teonaht/city72.jpg … directly it finds the file and it's 487kb but I can't open it. Looking at the binary file header it's saying it's a jpeg but running jpeginfo it says it's corrupted.pic.twitter.com/AvMPa2k0zS

http://archive.org only has a copy of this version alas ( https://web.archive.org/web/2016*/http://dedalvs.com/smileys/images/teonaht/city72.jpg … ). [Assuming it's been corrupted over time, it might be worth having a check of the integrity of other files on your server?]

I wasn’t aware that this type of a thing could happen (how does a virtual file corrupt simply by sitting there?). I have a stopgap solution in place now, but I’ll have to ask Sally for the actual files, if she still has them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_degradation … This is why people will say "it's not enough to have backups, you also should regularly check your backups to ensure they're still good" (which I don't personally do...) .

(most reliable long-term backup solution is to do a clay tablet conlang and translate your website to it for posterity...)
