I think the "speed up each level" mechanic was just a quick and dirty way to add difficulty. (It was a game jam game, was running out of time, etc.) But yes it forces you to make snap decisions.. "should I use this crest to cancel the thing to the left or right?"

If the incoming waveforms weren't symmetric, it would definitely need to be slower, since you'd need more time to perceive it
