That Medicaid work requirements will be "transformative" seems as plausible as the 1800's utopian socialist belief in a future Golden Age led by a New Man who will reconstruct society.

I'm not sure about history—historically, both parents worked even more than now, and fared worse—but it would be good to restructure our social arrangements so that men worked less outside the home, and took more direct family care.

Contra Sawhill, when it comes to promoting gender equality and high levels of prime-age employment: social democracy & comprehensive social security > "life rafts" & "self sufficiency"

Then why do conservatives continue to use a frame (all means-tested benefits=welfare) that taps into racial resentment? It seems like a question for principled, non-racists to take seriously. c:

If Dr. Sawhill really believed in "self-sufficiency as a goal", she would quit her Brookings job & take up subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and perhaps small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craftwork for household use and sale.

His genius in coining the phrase "nation of takers" seems worth at least $1 million by itself.

Covers of latest two books by AEI's Nicholas Eberstadt—both utilized "epidemic"/"crisis" framing and got a lot of coverage, especially the latter one, in the business/economic press.

Related: biggest increases in US birth rates are for unmarried women with a BA or higher. Also striking to me: in very low fertility nations (places like S. Korea, Singapore, Japan, Greece), share of all births that are to non-married women tends to be very low.

Many have argued that Charles Murray is a racist ... but let's not overlook his misogyny.

Haven't read UN report, but since no consensus on what extreme poverty is in US context, hard to say it's simply wrong. That said, my own view is that defining "extreme poverty" based solely on an income line isn't particularly helpful. c:

Maybe I'm missing, but seems like not including "divorced/separated/widowed" as a relationship history category here seems problematic. I'm guessing by early 30s about 10 percent of more of people have been divorced/separated/widowed at least once.
