I love remote work and having bosses that trust you. In todays standup my coworker was like “I’m at the beach so I’ll be offline but I’ll still knock out todays tasks before Monday” and nobody cares lol

The biggest mistake I see companies make is trying to get too much work done on a retreat.
Connections get accelerate so much through great memories and shared experiences.
You can have everyone record footage for a vlog to let the memories carry through to the next retreat.

Here is my very angry column about anti-vaxxers who wear yellow stars -- and their compulsive self-comparison to Holocaust victims. It's also the story of the heroes who smuggled a typhus vaccine into the Warsaw Ghetto, and brave sabotage in Buchenwald.

The partisan gap in Covid deaths has grown even larger.
October was the fifth consecutive month that the percentage gap between the death rates in heavily Trump counties and heavily Biden counties widened.

Struggling to connect on your remote team?
We've built a 67 person remote team that loves to work together while driving $29 million in annual revenue.
Here are 8 ideas we use for building a great culture in a distributed team:

That's all folks!
Does that help? Did you learn? Did you not get enough? Want to save this for later?
No worries, there's a post for that:

So: put it all in public channels!
If you name channels clearly, there's no such thing as too many channels.

Show this thread
Last thing, perhaps hardest & most important:
5️⃣ “I feel personally responsible for solving this” ➡️ Make it public
At , 74% of messages sent and 83% of message views are in public channels 💃
That makes it easier to be async, help each other, and easier to learn.

Using threads (how meta!) also helps - folks can search and find the *entire* conversation, rather than a snippet.
And: clever formatting can get extra 👀s on important threads.

Now that you're well-insulated, you may start worrying that you're out of the loop.
4️⃣ “I’ll be out of the loop!” ➡️ Define practices for ‘staying in the loop’
Our team uses a Slack channel & workflow to share work updates every Friday #FridayShip

Then, if you still have too many notifs, leave channels or mute channels, so you're only seeing relevant conversations.

First, turn off any notification that wouldn't be a welcome interruption.
Per , that means: no sounds, no badges, no message previews.
Or take it a step further: don't use the Slack app at all, keep it in the browser. 🤯

Now that you have ways to find the signal: HIDE.
3️⃣ “I can’t escape, it’s distracting or interrupting me” ➡️ Make it harder for Slack to find you

Once you've figured out urgency, the challenge is signal vs noise - too much gets lost in the backscroll.
2️⃣ “I’m afraid I’ll forget” ➡️ Set reminders
Slack has some great features for this, like:
⏰ Reminders!
🙈 Hiding channels that don't have unread messages

To communicate urgency:
⏰ Use an alert word, like 'code red' or 'pterodactyl', to make urgent messages stand out
🏠 Create an urgent channel
🚥 Try emoji like 🔴 or ❗ to communicate urgency

Don't reply immediately:
"Reply by the end of the day: It's great [to] take a break from Slack for 3 hours to focus or do something else, but... everyone should be able to expect a reply by the end of the day."

IMO, the hardest part is the *volume* of messages. It feels like the 🌎 is on 🔥... kinda always?
But urgent is actually the exception, not the rule. So, we should act like it.
1️⃣ “Everything is Urgent” ➡️ Communicate Urgency

In 6+ years of working remotely, I've spent more work time on Slack than perhaps anywhere else.
Annnnddd it's not always great 😬
With a little help from some smart folks, here's what I've learned to make it better.🧵 👇

If I was in the mood to start a new business (or if I was @itchio), I would build a "payment processor" (read: thin wrapper around Stripe) that lets players log in with Apple ID / Game Center / etc and remembers your payment info across games made by different devs/publishers.

Question for the Twitterverse: what's one way your team uses Slack or chat that you think is particularly clever or helpful?
I think most teams do this *badly* - let's build a list of better ways!

It is inhumane to deny this to people.

By the grace of God I caught my unwanted college pregnancy early and was able to have a medication abortion- a pill and a suppository and some cramping and bleeding. I lived in Texas at the time. I was 20 years old. The father was in school on a preacher’s son scholarship.

This is heartbreaking.
Between voter suppression, this bill, permitless carry - it’s a devastating time to be a Texan. It’s getting worse.
