When you start building a new team or a new company, remember that your first team members are the most crucial. They will define the culture, attitude and work style for the rest joining later. It's very hard to change direction if you did not get this right at the beginning.

Yeah. That's rough. :( I suspect that sort of thing usually happens when a company doesn't understand the value of those people, or when a company is changing and the "old guard" is not a fit? Can you see other reasons?
