"I don’t know all the details. I don’t do deep dives on this." - Matt Damon, in the middle of sharing a lot of opinions on "this"https://twitter.com/vulture/status/941456565516886017 …

Like as if "this moment" hadn't happened men would be out here taking responsibility, not denying "it"?

There was no "braggadocio" with Weinstein? This is just false. Like completely.pic.twitter.com/pN3Di9HL3Y

This part is extra absurd. He was "a bully," "a womanizer," "I wouldn't want him married to anyone close to me"...but yes I would continue making movies with him until foreverpic.twitter.com/vxktZFMOxu

This actually gets to the heart of what Damon is trying to do here, instead of interrogating hypermasculinity, he is looking to define a line between hypermasculinity - what he describes as bullying, womanizing - and what he thinks of as "crimes," which only seems to include rape

"As long as nobody's committed a crime..." is the lowest of low bars. Especially for a straight white cisgender man with the power Matt Damon has. It requires nothing of him...even as his answer acknowledges that there is something he *could* dopic.twitter.com/oiiZ6A3PUM

Also when he implies that he ignored Weinstein's bullying because he was making the "best movies out there," Damon perpetuates that oppressive idea that so-called "great" art justifies hypermasculinity, misogyny

In other words, there are certain kinds of movies which are SO GREAT (let's be real, he means Good Will Hunting) that as a straight white man, you just *have to* suck it up and work with men who are creeps and who might be hurting women (but let's never do a "deep dive" on that)

this is an example of the kind of willful ignorance about patriarchy which men are capable of holding in their heads, but the interview is also filled with examples of the hoops which we have to jump through to maintain and justify that ignorance

among the many horrifying and depressing things about Damon and his thoughts here is the fact that this is a man who has played a major role in defining what a "good man" looks and acts like in this country - and he continues to be given the chance to play that role
