It also reminds me how deeply men learn to pursue and idealize the performance of masculinity. So much so that even when men like Kelly present it back to us, in all its horror, we are frozen by cognitive dissonance and still unable to let go of that ideal. #SurvigingRKelly

And instead men tend to practice willful ignorance, pretending that they can’t see the abuse, rape, and other violence in front of and all around us - whether it’s on a tape or not. Because admitting it’s real means stepping away from the performance.

The easier move is to continue to perform that American masculinity, to make jokes and to wink at other hypermasculine, abusive men, as a way of maintaining secrets and status. All while dehumanizing women and people of other genders, especially if they’re Black.

#SurvivingRKelly is also just powerfully made & part of why it’s so devastating is how purposefully dream hampton frames/lingers on the survivors. I’m struck by how rare it is to ever see so many Black women on TV at once, let alone to shed light on systemic abuse.Show this thread
