so as we start a new decade, here’s to the next shift. onward, upward, and forward! #humane

@bethanybongiorno and I named our company Humane because it signifies our commitment to developing ways of interacting with technology that will make us more powerful, while also rebalancing the role of technology in our lives.

but I am an optimist. i believe technology is a tool that can be harnessed to enhance our lives, both as individuals and on a societal level. but doing so requires vigilance, discipline and great care from those who innovate, on behalf of their customers.

our industry is at an inflection point and the intentions and motivations of tech companies are rightly being questioned. emerging technologies only increase the need for companies to not only “get it right” but more importantly “not get it wrong”.

if we ultimately end up in a place where the smartphone is the pinnacle of human to computer interaction, i believe that means we’ve failed.

but as we begin 2020 and a new decade - we enter the awkward teenage years of these devices and it's becoming increasingly obvious to most that it’s time for a shift.

i knew touchscreen based devices would quickly become our constant companions - that the definition of a modern human would eventually be a network connected one.

13 years ago today when we announced the iphone - i chose to walk through sf to the launch event at moscone center - wanting to observe and commit the world to memory, as i knew things would never be the same.
