Hot ttrpg take: Requiring writers to have lore or system mastery of your game before you will hire them is gatekeeping and is why you can't find marginalized voices to work on your shit.

Freelancers literally make their bread by being able to quickly read something and comprehend it and turn it into usable words. If you can't convey tone, approach, and the themes of your game to get them up to speed, then that's on you, not them.

When I go to apply for a game I'm interested in, and have passing knowledge of the lore, and I must answer an "are you nerd enough" quiz, I'm immediately ready to rage quit this industry. In this day and age of easy access to research materials, your gatekeeping is just gross.

Well, looks like this is getting some traction. Remember: Black Lives Matter Support marginalized creators by buying their work.

Big agree, half the reason we hire freelancers is to get a voice and perspective different than our own, can't imagine doing anything else.

When we did our big search for folks to write unique monsters we did offer a first time bonus under the assumption that writers would learn how a monster is formatted. Mastery is not important but comprehension definitely can be, especially if stat blocks are involved.

That's not quite marginalization. That's more gatekeeping on knowledge. Nobody has complete mastery.

But then it does end up cutting out marginalized groups

Can't you have a couple of calls with them to explain the world? I thought that's how you make a 'writer's room.' Because even after they read your stuff there's no guarantee they will process everything.
