I’m not sure how it got introduced to the tech world, but I suspect it is in large part a reaction to the fact that tech leaders often have no idea what they’re doing.

Would you say this thread falls in the line of ruinous empathy vs. radical candor? Not exactly the same, but the "let people be great" feels a little like ruinous empathy.

That's a good framing of it. These sorts of things feel like pendulums, where your environment creates pressure to move you to one side or the other based on what's been in vogue

All of this also speaks to the fact that good management is a learned skill and a full time effort. So many companies do not invest in teaching actual management skills.

I once had the honor of training with special forces soldiers I asked 1 who had multiple deployments and 10+ yrs of experience; how do you balance being in charge of someone and bring their friend? He said “I still haven’t figured it out” Even the best teams grow “too close”
