The amount of agency you're granted will vary based on a lot of factors (especially your level/seniority), but I suspect the amount you have is a decent proxy for career growth potential in a given role

Corollary - try not to do too much work in areas where you don't want to be seen as the specialist. You may be fine doing that project, but are you ok if for the next 3 years everyone looks to you for similar projects?

Yes, I have a number of arcs where I was asked to "look into X" despite no expertise, simply because nobody was around. I'm subsequently "the expert on X" despite lacking expertise simply because I looked into it once.
