Part of the shade cast on "ad hoc" work, I think, is a consequence of the obsession with causal inference. Folks want to have falsifiable hypotheses so they can do Real Science, but ad hoc work is the often the other side of the coin--hypothesis generation

Yeah, and I think this is one of the reasons Airbnb's knowledge repo never caught on broadly. It was oriented around almost academic research, where most companies just squint at a bunch of charts and look for patterns (which is still very useful!)

The fact that so many DS are refugees from academia definitely doesn't help IMO. Analysis at a company needs to happen way too quickly to work like a journal. Your team probably won't have the time to catch up on your work, and your stakeholders definitely won't have the patience
