I thought about giving data roles more manual labor subtitles like "plumber" or "janitor", but all my friends said pass

I used to describe management as "shit umbrellery" but somehow it didn't catch on

This pretty much describes how I ended up in software engineering. The mathematical elegance is less obvious, but there's also much less (though still plenty) messiness from measuring the real world.

As a non-mathematician, I never held any illusions about mathematical elegance as a way to accurately describe the real world. Biology is nothing if not messy, and people are too.

Coming from a social science background, I also had low expectations for how precisely I could measure anything, but I had a period where I had hope for ML finding useful patterns in large datasets. I quickly learned that the best datasets are intentionally constructed.

I think that’s probably only true for people coming from stem. I’m a political scientist and the messiness is what excites me. I’m not trying to fit humans into tidy theories.
