I was recently talking to a friend who is also a DS, and the idea of a "data science spidey sense" came up. It's a goofy name, but a real thing--substantive expertise. IMO this is the most underrated part of the famous Drew Conway data science Venn diagram.

The two biggest signals to me would be that they 1. focus on business impact over tooling / techniques, and 2. are able to think in terms of tradeoffs

Could also be worth poking at what parts of the job they're excited about. Does the idea of cross functional work annoy them or seem like it'll be a burden? Not a good sign
