Data scientists and data science managers, how many people are on your team? How often do you directly collaborate with your teammates, and what sorts of projects do you tend to collaborate on?

I manage 4 directly. We tend to directly collaborate (pairing) on stuff outside of their comfort zones, esp in the initial stages of projects or if they’re more jr. this covers all sorts of work (pipelines, dashboards, analysis, models, internal tools, analytics infra)

I also work with 2-3 other adjacent DS managers on strategy, coordination, and hand-off of technical output between our groups

For your 4 directs, who are their typical stakeholders? Is there overlap in their work streams, or are they mostly sharing methodology with their teammates?

I am also very curious how coordination works with your peer managers! Do you have a shared roadmap amongst you?

when there's a big enough project where we're all involved, that means there's usually a larger x-fnl team with a lead PM who helps coordinate. it is tricky though, bc work allocation between teams is a function of both bandwidth, subject matter expertise, and technical expertise

How does working with a PM feel for something like that? When my team does collaborative or multi-person projects, either me or one of the DS ends up playing PM. I think it's mostly a consequence of product folks at our company not having a good feel for the DS project lifecycle
