Data scientists and data science managers, how many people are on your team? How often do you directly collaborate with your teammates, and what sorts of projects do you tend to collaborate on?

I tend to play a strategic role, making sure things are moving, tools/tactics are well chosen, and risks are acknowledged and addressed. Only in critical projects with a lot of pressure I jump in and play with code. Otherwise I see my job as that of a coach.
What's your process for evaluating if tools/tactics are appropriate for the situation?

@ShopifyData we have tech reviews for that, with an emphasis on stating risks and trade-offs explicitly. A panel of reviewers from other areas discuss the proposal and determine if we can go into build phase. This is mostly done when projects are complex, of course. -
For less complex projects, I usually request some sort of sketch of the solution with explicit acknowledgement of risks and trade-offs, and we discuss it together. A mini-review, in a way.
