From previous roles, varied between 5-20 although we served very large orgs. My role was strategic and constantly looking for opportunities for the data scientists to show their magic. Projects cover multiple departments, daily collaboration critical to avoid duplication

20! I can't even imagine that. What was your main strategy for avoiding duplication of work?

I tend to play a strategic role, making sure things are moving, tools/tactics are well chosen, and risks are acknowledged and addressed. Only in critical projects with a lot of pressure I jump in and play with code. Otherwise I see my job as that of a coach.

The last 12 months I've been managing two teams of ~4 ICs each. One was a functional team supporting analytics and data algorithms/pipelines for a particular company area, and one, mission oriented, was building an internal facing data product.

I manage 4 directly. We tend to directly collaborate (pairing) on stuff outside of their comfort zones, esp in the initial stages of projects or if they’re more jr. this covers all sorts of work (pipelines, dashboards, analysis, models, internal tools, analytics infra)

I also work with 2-3 other adjacent DS managers on strategy, coordination, and hand-off of technical output between our groups
