DMing has been my personal lesson in letting go of control. I used to do elaborate prep only to have my party do something that was not only totally different from what I expected, but also way more interesting. Embracing TTRPGs as collective storytelling is a better experience

FWIW, collaborative storytelling is definitely what I aspire to too. Will check those articles out. My problem is that while I can work with improv to a point, doing things like setting up a full blown dungeon on the fly (especially on VTT) is out of my reach.
Like, in this case, the players have an objective they're working toward, and what I'm trying to write is the environment surrounding it (a village, rough outline of what's there, nearby dungeon that has the macguffin, but letting them figure out the "how" of it).
