Sometimes I wonder--has big data failed to deliver on its promise, or are people just bad at thinking statistically?

Can't it be both?
It probably is a bit of both TBH. My thought in writing that tweet was more that there are trends to be found in the much-hyped, quasi-mythological Big Data, but people who are not used to thinking statistically tend to overestimate the strength and significance of those trends
