Teaching my own kid, whom I know quite well and who is relatively studious is still quite difficult, in terms of keeping her motivated and sussing out the limits of her knowledge. How kindergarten teachers do this for whole classes is a mystery to me.

Well there is that. Ours happens to have a really good kindergarten teacher, as far as I can tell!

But even good ones might not be doing better on average for individual students than you are. I suspect that the kids survive this by largely teaching themselves...

Yes, that's true, though I think some of that is a difference of view. Like, speaking just for myself, I don't see a huge amount of value in teaching small kids history. Everything you can teach a kid about history up to the age of ~10 can be learned in a weekend as an adult.

I think we also undervalue what young children learn when they obsessively explore some topic we think of as unimportant or weird. Or even what they learn while playing in a garden.

Yeah, what I'm basically doing is insisting on a little bit of stuff, and leaving the rest open. Anecdotally, the closest to "forcing" something we did was reading. Now that she reads independently, we've stopped lessons, which is great for everyone. Math is tougher that way!

My kids mostly ask me about math when it comes up in video games.

video games are great for learning math, especially ones that have internals revealed (i.e., are open for munchkining because you can simply calculate the expected result of any action)https://twitter.com/imhinesmi/status/1221963140667203586?s=20 …
