"People believe what they want to hear." I hear this a lot, even from serious people. It seems obviously false to me. Counterexample: anxiety. Why would anyone have anxious or fearful thoughts if they merely believed what they want to be true?
One possibility: people like being the victim, since it gives a reason/excuse for failure People like feeling the the world is biased against them because it justifies not trying People like being angry, because righteous anger is an incredible feeling
