concept: epistemic allergies certain ways of transmitting information make me instantly think the information wrong mostly coming from certain word/tone choices

Maybe we can develop immunity to our allergies so we can develop an acquired taste for the diverse ways that information is shared! 😋https://twitter.com/magghu/status/1237813068517773320 …

Love this concept. I feel like a lot of ppl (myself included) are allergic to certain ways of knowing/communicating. But being able to appreciate diff ways of knowing/being/learning/communicating can lead to a richer understanding of the world. #EpistemicDiversity https://twitter.com/imhinesmi/status/1237744148247121921 …

some of them are good though like, certain keywords are signs that people get their information from a specific source, which might be untrustworthy word choice and tone can also be a good sign of someone's information collecting methods, which can be quite bad

for example, if someone is smug or overly proud of winning against the Outgroup, then they probably have a super biased view of the world and it is safe to dismiss what they think is true about the Outgroup

Can be helpful proxies for sure, to situate the context someone might be seeing things from. And perhaps raise Qs re: the 'validity' of their sources/interpretation. But I feel like we too often 'dismiss' w/out trying to understand the others' perspective first. We assume.

I think it's helpful to notice our allergies and see that the perspective we're coming from is also a lens of sorts. How might we see the truth in each others' worldviews? I think @SarahAMcManus and @cognazor might call this #MemeticMediation? ☺️

That said it takes two to tango and if the other is not willing to be charitable with your views and seek to understand then, sometimes not worth your time/energy 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's also a privilege to discuss topics 'intellectually' that may be personally truamatising.

im familiar with memetic mediation and its certainly good, and i do think people should try to expose themselves to a wide variety of viewpoints etc but im also curious about good ways to increase signal:noise ratio a good set of antibodies will cut through most of the noise

The lens I would offer here, is to bring in -- what is the purpose of each specific conversation / interaction? Trying to solve this question of "what one ought to do" in a general / "objective" / "universal" case will be more difficult than the specific - or even intractable.

If you're considering whether or not to continue interacting with someone, and you feel your epistemic allergies activating -- what's the context of this scene? Do you have an ongoing relationship with them? Do y'all value that? Do you have a sense of shared purpose?
