it also looks like a good test drive for any tech needed to colonize space if your environment cant survive the relatively nice environment of the pacific ocean it wont handle space

so theres obvious problem potential with making small autonomous semi-nations in that they become excellent tax havens, theyre impossible to regulate, or whatever other criticisms you have of ancap having small testbeds for various regulatory schemes seems good though, imo

one of the neat things is that floating cities are really easy to make modular if you dont like a city you can just detach your home and float away so the archipelago model might actually be doable

the environmental implications are also pretty interesting theyre talking about using the heat differential between the surface and the depths as a power source (also solar panels) also algae farming, though im pretty sure thatll taste gross and way more space for fishing

hmm so oil rigs create huge ecosystems around them, because barnacles grow on the sides of the pipes in order to make a floating home stable, you have to support it in a giant pipe going down into the ocean meaning homes make their own fish

so the first prototype of a seastead cost $350k to build in thailand a couple lived in it for a few months then the thai military confiscated it for violating thai sovereignty or something

https://twitter.com/no_harm_/status/1236787500833820673?s=20 … so it looks like iron fertilization is done deliberately by putting iron sulfide into water or naturally by rust particles well, seasteads are right next to a bunch of salt water so id expect there to be lots of rust

Possibly they could be used as iron fertilization locations as well, although I'm not an expert on how that works

(iron is lacking in the ocean, and algae requires trace amounts to grow. i dont think itll be difficult to get enough)

https://twitter.com/imhinesmi/status/1236794517602349061?s=20 … speaking of toilets: apparently sewage is only a pain to process if it contains poop there no room for a sewage plant+limited freshwater so the solution is a toilet where the pee and poop go different places the pee is filtered the same way as seawater

you probably could, but itd be a lot harder i dont think the tech is actually all that advanced, for most of it mostly just materials, though they have some specialized toilets

or it is used as fertilizer the poop is put into sealed containers with a seed layer of microbes to break it down and remove pathogens (guess where those come from) source: https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/blue-frontiers.appspot.com/o/docs%2FState-of-the-art_report_-_Food_Systems.pdf?alt=media&token=3d19c681-0321-4086-bea7-d11e4c0da010 …
