Not wanting to do things is quite often fine and good, but not actually socially acceptable. So we need an excuse that doesn't make us sound like we're asserting super high status - "I can't" is low-status and hard to argue against.

Solution is to become okay with saying "I don't want to" as a reason not to do things. Then you can develop useful skills and use them only when you want to. Other people might not be okay with this. It's a norm that has to be grown.
