A general pattern that I see over and over again: If you cannot do something, you cannot be coerced into doing it. This gives everyone a strong incentive to credibly signal that something is impossible for them rather than merely difficult. Especially to themself.

If you're sufficiently bad at something, people won't expect you to do it. So, in order to not have to do things, people will strategically not learn useful skills.
