Has anyone seen any good theories as to why depression and anxiety appear to be at all time highs in the 20-40 cohort? Or maybe it just SEEMS that way. Looking for really thoughtful analysis, not just glib “well have you seen the world around you” type answers

Haidt and Lukianoff have a hypothesis that it results from shifts in child-rearing styles (from both parents and especially schools) that has inflicted intense neurotic anxiety and hyper-vigilance on themhttps://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/the-coddling-of-the-american-mind/399356/ …

I tend to agree though I think there are many overlapping causes (Haidt and Lukianoff would probably agree with that too)

the stats get even worse for the Gen Z cohort. Millennials are bad, Gen Z is in hell.

This concerns me a lot. I'm wondering what I can do to help locally and if anyone has suggested avenues to begin healing/rebuilding whatever is contributing to this.

I'm in the same camp. I REALLY want to be able to do something more than just observe (or wholesome poast on the bird site). I think people really just need good peer support networks that aren't embedded in family, school, or job. We all have a lot of healing to do.

this is also one of the reasons I've become an advocate for sweeping education system reforms. locking kids up in dystopian child prison Kafka-trap hell realms for 16 years is horrifying.

a question on my mind lately though: what does effective advocacy really look like? I've read Illich and Gatto and their critiques are right on but none of it mattered. Things only got worse despite their writing.

Does talking about unschooling with parents work at all? Serious question. (While unschooling your own kids)
