Has anyone seen any good theories as to why depression and anxiety appear to be at all time highs in the 20-40 cohort? Or maybe it just SEEMS that way. Looking for really thoughtful analysis, not just glib “well have you seen the world around you” type answers

I suspect it's not monocausal which makes this hard to answer. Most of the actual takes on the subject I've seen have seemed very "The thing millenials are killing now is mental health!!" or "This shit's complicated, yo".

My guess would be that it is some mix of uncertainty about the future, environmental pollutants, change in diet, difficulty forming community, and difficulty finding meaning, and that we're going to struggle to disentangle which bits are which.

Add selection bias to that. We didn't always have the ability to talk to people with depression at will. They tend to hide themselves, except through the internet. I don't know anyone IRL with depression. I do know a couple with anxiety problems, but not crippling ones.

Also: talking about depression has become an accepted thing to do in many circles. I'm not sure how true that was in the past.
