I had a conversation in high school with a guy who bullied me in middle school. It was about tinkering, cars, and future plans, nothing about his former actions. But it was still somehow the best apology I've ever seen.

Somewhere deep in the subtext was "I'm not that guy anymore. Your thoughts are important and you matter. I hope you have a good life." Hard to communicate these things deliberately.
