The issue I most side with rationalist/transhumanist types on is that it's incredibly weird that "death is bad" is a controversial opinion.

Death is bad to the extent life is good. Being dead means you can no longer enjoy all the good things in life. It also means that nobody else can ever talk with you again, so whatever knowledge you had is lost forever.

Sure, though the fact that this is the case makes life all the more precious. Besides, being dead doesn't mean missing out. There'll be no kind of experience of any kind. You only have FOMO while you're alive.

I'm going to be honest, the first part is pure cope. Scarcity does not add value. No FOMO != not missing out. You can judge how good an experience would be against having no experience at all. Many are better.

As an experiment: try treating all arguments in favor of death as if you are trying to convince a bunch of immortals that death is good and they should add a maximum lifespan. Then try treating all arguments in favor of death as arguments in favor of suicide. (Because they are)

This is where I get a bit lost. Given that I am going to die, I don't see any value in trying to convince myself that dying is a bad thing.

It might be possible for technology to prevent death. A long shot, but worth trying. Also, I don't think much, if any, convincing has to be done: every actual case of death is a tragedy, we already know it's bad, we just don't admit it because it's scary.
