This is useful! It also makes me notice I'm most curious about how the aesthetic of "applying effort" becomes serious and grim. So not just the difference between trying and signalling-trying, but between serious and silly

Thinking about it, it does seem kind of weird that we associate a serious face with actual seriousness - lots of the best work ever done was done for the fun of it, because it was interesting.

Maybe The Serious Face indicates that you are being *reliable*. You're going to consistently act the same way (even if the actual output is mediocre). vs silly face, where you do whatever sounds fun - a lower baseline, but much higher variance and peaks >10x above seriousness
