One of the forms anxiety comes in is fear of not being good enough. And some of this probably comes out as hating anyone who doesn't meet your standards of virtue. (Including yourself)

Lots of the nastiness around social justice might come from a deep-rooted fear of being racist/sexist/etc. Lashing out at people who don't meet your level of virtue because you're terrified of not being virtuous enough is a really dangerous trap to fall in.

I'm thinking linked over long amounts of time. I have trouble imaging having the emotional energy to feel both anxiety AND hatred at the same time.

One of the tricky things about this is that they never happens at the same time, so the root cause isn't obvious. People don't consciously go "I'm scared of being that guy so I'm gonna hate him", it just sort of happens in the background.
