Reading, no, but I don't think teachers helped at all. Just biweekly library visits. Writing, absolutely. Mostly because I had to write about stupid topics I didn't care about, in a form that was unnatural to think in.

I mean, textbooks usually are tedious. When I was a kid, I was reading mostly fiction. It's hard to know more about what the problem might be without a better idea of what the process is. Are you just teaching young kids to read, or is there something more advanced going on?

Well why should they care about information transfer? Yeah it's a useful skill in the abstract, but the actual stuff in school hasn't helped them much.
